Isolations

As a former dancer I have always been enamored with shapes created by the human body.  This project, entitled Isolations, is a response to inspiration from the dance world.  These photographs were shot using dramatic studio lighting, a black backdrop, and models dressed in various articles of black clothing.  At the beginning of this project I noticed that posed sessions felt very stiff and dull.  I then began to allow my models to move freely during our sessions and the photographs possessed much more fluidity.  I shot in large quantities and found the moments that I was looking for in the editing process.  Some of the photographs are meant to stand alone while others, such as the grid on the cover, are meant to show gestures visually referencing one another in a single piece.  The project is broken into two linked portfolios; a series focused on hands, and one on the body.  I hope that through these Isolations my viewers can find the often overlooked beauty in a frozen gesture.
